Open a Command Prompt in Explorer (Windows Vista)

January 14, 2010 · Filed Under Command Line, Explorer · Comment

There is an easy (but tricky) way to open a command prompt window for a specific folder you are browsing in Windows Explorer in Windows Vista:

  1. Press and hold the Shift key, then right-click on a folder in Windows Explorer.
  2. The Explorer context menu will appear.  Click on the menu item Open Command Window Here.

This will open a command prompt window for the selected folder:

Note that this does NOT work if you shift+right-click in the tree view on the left side of the Explorer window!  Also note that this works only in Windows Vista and later, and not in Windows XP or before without special software.

Woodstock Windows 7 Theme

Windows 7 is apparently everything that Windows Vista was supposed to be: faster, compatible with our existing hardware and software, and easier to use.  One feature that’s gaining attention again is Windows Themes: backgrounds, icons, colors and fonts that give your Windows Desktop a unique look and feel.

For all you Woodstock fans, Markus-Deviant has created a new Woodstock Theme for Windows 7.  As he says, “hope you enjoy the summer of 69.”  I know I sure did… I was only 5 at the time.

People accustomed to using the Internet Explorer web browser may find that one of their favorite features seems to be missing in Firefox: “Save Target As.”
