“User Accounts” Window Appears When Click Windows Vista Start Button

If you click the Windows Vista Start button:

And the “User Accounts” window mysteriously appears:

The problem occurs if your Windows task bar is located on the right side of your screen and you have a full Start menu.  Then when you click the Start button, the button that opens the “User Accounts” window is positioned directly under your mouse.

The image below shows the “User Accounts” button (which looks like a robot head, which is my user’s icon).  In this case, the “User Accounts” button is positioned directly underneath the Windows Start button, so there is no problem.

But if I were to add another item or two to my Start menu, the Start menu would be pushed up so that the “User Accounts” button pops up directly over the Start button when you click it.  Hence, Windows thinks that you are also clicking on the “User Accounts” button, and so it opens the “User Accounts” window, which isn’t what you wanted.

There are three options to solve this problem:

  1. Remove a few items from your Start menu so the menu will fall below the Start button as shown in the image above.
  2. Make the Windows task bar wider or narrower, so the “Start” and “User Accounts” buttons don’t overlap.
  3. Move your Windows task bar to the top, bottom or left side of your screen.

I simply deleted a couple of items from my Start menu, and the problem was solved.
